Good Afternoon Everyone,

It is a chilly, cloudy, damp day. This morning we had light rain and heavy mist. I asked a customer as he came in the front door, “How is it outside?” He replied “Chilly, I think its November”. Even though is it still rather cool the plants are growing. Asparagus and Rhubarb are ready. Spring is here but we are just waiting for the weather to warm up. We have had a lot of rain and the gardens are very wet.

Last week I spent some time at Lake Erie for the songbird migration. It was very windy and cold part of the time, but we still had a good time and saw a lot of different birds. Some teenage boy spotted a Townsend’s Warbler which is a rarity for Ohio. They are usually only out west. It caused quite an excitement.

Now for the events at the Mt. Hope Auction Barn:

  • Swap Meet, May 17th – 18th
  • Memorial Trotting Sale, May 24th
  • The Annual Kidney Fund Benefit Sale, June 1st
  • Summer Carriage and Pony Sale, June 6th
  • Summer Draft Horse Sale, June 7th
  • Machinery Sale, June 15th

If anyone would like something to do during the summer months, come to Holmes County , Ohio. There’s lots to do and see. Right now the countryside is lush green , the trees are becoming fully foliaged making the wooded areas look green again. Along with having black and white cattle grazing in the fields it creates a beautiful scene.

Here is a recipe using Rhubarb that my niece enjoys:

Rhubarb Cake Dessert

1 cup butter
2 cups flour
2 tbsp sugar
-Crumble together
-Press into a 13 x 9 cake pan

5 cups rhubarb
6 egg yolks
1.5 – 2 cups sugar
4 tbsp flour
1 cup cream
½ tsp salt
-Pour on top of crumb mixture and bake at 350’ for 40-50 minutes.

Meringue
6 egg whites
¾ cup sugar
2 tbsp vanilla
Pinch of salt
-Put this on top of baked filling just before it is completely done. Bake till golden brown.

I will close with the verse Psalms 86:5
“For thou, Lord, art God, and ready to forgive: and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.”
