Good Afternoon Everyone,                                                     6.12.23

It is Monday and we are off on a good start for the week. It rained yesterday PM and this morning. It had been dry. We are grateful for the soft and gentle rain. Hopefully the lawns will become nice and green again.

As I biked to work, I was getting wet from the light rain that was coming against me. The scent that entered my sense of smell from my raincoat was damp and moist. It seems odd to think that we can smell rain, but I think we can. Some more scents that came to me before I got to work were the unpleasant odor of a skunk and the fumes of varnish as I passed a woodworking shop. How often do we take our sense of smell for granted?

We had a good crop of first cutting hay. This rain should give the corn and gardens a nice boost. I had my first meal of snap peas last week and I anticipate more as the plants look nice.

The events at Mt. Hope this month consist of:

  • Machinery Sale- June 17th
  • Swap Meet- June 14th & 15th
  • Steam & Engine Show- August 3rd-5th
  • Ohio Crippled Children’s Fund auction- June 24th
  • Ohio Mennonite Relief Sale – July 8th

Yesterday we found 2 baby Orioles on the ground in our yard. I was surprised and disappointed, but then I remembered a little while earlier I heard a ruckus in the pine tree and had seen an Orchard Oriole and an American Kestrel flying around having a fuss. I assume the Kestrel destroyed the nest. I guess that is a side of nature we don’t like to see.

Asparagus has done well. Here is a recipe from the “Simple Foods” cookbook.

Parmesan Asparagus

2 ½ cups asparagus

2 tblsp butter or olive oil

½ tsp garlic powder

½ tsp pink salt

2 tblsp parmesan cheese

Cut asparagus 2” long. Melt butter in skillet, then add asparagus and seasonings. Cover and simmer until asparagus is dark green. Remove from heat and sprinkle with parmesan cheese.
